ARRIVAL IN MADRIDProgramme Upon arrival at Madrid Airport you will be met by a representative of the travel agency, who will assist you with all formalities and take you to your hotel for overnight in Madrid. |
Day 2

MADRIDProgramme In the morning visit the National Archaeological Museum (closed on Mondays) and the Instituto de Valencia de Don Juan; both museums display rich collections of Mudejar objects and furniture related to everyday life in palaces and convents. Day 3

TOLEDO / MADRIDProgramme Depart for Toledo. Of the numerous Mudéjar buildings still preserved in Toledo, the tour includes the most representative ones, exemplifying different functions and architectural evolution. Starting from the Puerta del Sol (built in the 10th century as a part of the Islamic city walls and restored in 14th and 15th centuries with Mudéjar elements) continue to the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz, which incorporates an existing mosque turned into a church after Alfonso VI conquered Toledo in 1085. Afterwards visit the Church of San Román, the synagogues of Santa María la Blanca and Tránsito, both turned into churches after the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, the Palace of the Moor’s Workshop (an old Mudéjar palace built between 1325 and 1350), the palaces of the Toledo and Ayala families, and the Church of San Andrés, which dates back to the Visigoth period; it was turned into a mosque in the 11th century and restored in the 12th century with Almohad architectonic elements. ARÉVALO / MADRIGAL DE LAS ALTAS TORRES / COCA / TORDESILLAS Programme Depart for Arévalo, one of the ancient cities of Castile, whose monuments and palaces were based on the techniques adopted both in Tierra de Campos and Toledo. Visit the castle, walls and bridges (Mudéjar, 14th-15th centuries) the old town, the churches of San Martín, Santa María, San Miguel and Salvador. Continue to Madrigal de las Altas Torres, to visit its massive walls (13th-15th centuries), the Church of Santa María del Castillo and San Nicolás and the convent (home of the Queen Isabela la Católica). Transfer to Coca to visit the castle, a significant example of Mudejar military architecture in Castile, and then to Tordesillas for overnight. Reference to Exhibition Trail: ITINERARY VI |
Day 5

TORDESILLAS / TORO / ZAMORAProgramme In Tordesillas are located some of the finest examples of Cistercian and St. Clare’s convents, which hosted the daughters of the kings and of the most important families of Castile and León during the 14th and 15th centuries. Some of these convents were old palaces left as legacies by these nuns. The most famous is the Palace of Pedro I (Convent of Santa Clara), whose structure was similar to Toledan palaces and to Patio de los Leones in Granada. Afterwards continue to Toro, one of the most important centres of Mudéjar architecture in Castile and León, to visit its brick monuments: the Church of Santa Maria de la Vega (known also as Cristo de las Batallas), the Church of San Lorenzo and the Convent of Santa Sofía. Day 6

ZAMORA / SAHAGÚN / MADRIDProgramme In Zamora visit the Cathedral and other Romanesque churches, then move to Sahagún. Sahagún was probably the first city of Castile where Mudéjar art spread, forming the so-called pre-classical or Romanesque-Mudéjar, and the Gothic-Mudéjar style in the 13th century. Visit the church of San Tirso (closed on Monday) and the Sanctuary of La Peregriña. Continue to Madrid for overnight. Reference to Exhibition Trail: ITINERARY VIII.1 |
