Description |
|
Since Fatimid times and thereafter throughout the reign of the Ayyubids and the Mamluks, Caliphs and Sultans held processions to celebrate important events. Such celebrations were among the few occasions in the year that ordinary people would view the display of wealth of the Sultan and his court. While these events varied greatly the most spectacular and the richest in symbolism and vestments was the procession in honour of the accession of a new sultan, an occasion of great pomp and ceremony for the palace, which ended with the celebration of a magnificent procession through the city. The fact that the majority of sultans and high-ranking officials of State had their monuments constructed along the route bears testimony to the importance of the procession. |
