İznik (ancient Nicea), capital of the Anatolian Seljuq State between 1075 and 1097, came under Byzantine rule once again during the First Crusade. However, the second Ottoman ruler, Orhan Gazi, conquered İznik again in the year 1331. İznik was adorned with various structures during the Ottoman period built by the sultans and many administrators. For example, Murad I had an imaret built in İznik in the name of his beloved mother, Nilüfer Hatun. Orhan Gazi himself distributed food in the imaret he had built, and also lit the oil lamps at the inauguration of the madrasa he commissioned in İznik. The Çandarlıs, a distinguished family, played an important role in state services ever since the establishment of the Ottoman State. Çandarlı Halil Hayreddin Pasha was İznik's first kadı. Several of Çandarlı Halil Hayreddin Pasha's sons and grandsons rose to the rank of Grand Vizier and some members of this family did not forget their city of birth and thus decorated İznik with beautiful structures. |
