The city of Saragossa with its Cathedral of San Salvador where the Kings of Aragon were crowned, was the creative centre of the Mudejar style in Aragon and responsible for the dissemination of the style, thanks above all to the royal patronage it enjoyed. This unique style was developed in the first place in the Palace of Aljafería, an Islamic palace from the 11th century, which after the conquest of the city by Alfonso I el Batallador (the Fighter) in the year 1118, was converted into the palace of the Kings of Aragon. They conserved it and added Mudejar rooms, using for them Muslim master craftsmen. Our itinerary through the Mudejar part of the city of Saragossa follows the same route as the Coronation procession. The visit begins in the Mudejar rooms and the apartments of the Catholic Monarchs in the complex of the Aljafería Palace, both excellent examples of royal patronage. Then it continues through the busy district of San Pablo, with its Mudejar church and tower to finish in the Cathedral of San Salvador, in which there are magnificent testimonies to the patronage of the archbishops and Popes. The visit can be continued in the eastern part of the city, by visiting the bustling Mudejar parishes of La Magdalena, San Miguel de los Navarros and San Gil. |
